The 90s candy aisle was all about fun, from sour challenges to candy you could wear. This One Gotta Go card puts four favorites together: Pop Rocks, Ring Pops, Fun Dip and Warheads. Each one came with a gimmick as memorable as the taste.

Three candies stay in the corner store, and one disappears forever. Think about the candy you spent your allowance on, the one you dared friends to eat and the one you mostly bought for the experience. Then pick and share the candy memory that still makes you smile.

Pop Rocks vs Ring Pops vs Fun Dip vs Warheads

A. Pop Rocks

Pop Rocks crackle and pop on your tongue, which made them a playground sensation and the subject of a famous myth about soda. The fun is in the feeling, not the flavor. Once the novelty wears off, many people admit they never really liked the taste.

Keep it if: You still love the crackle on your tongue and remember daring a friend to try them with soda.

B. Ring Pops

Ring Pops let you wear your candy like jewelry, which made them perfect for kids who wanted to feel fancy. They were sticky and lasted forever. The downside is the sticky hands and the fact that you could only eat them slowly.

Keep it if: You wore one like a diamond ring and still smile when you see them at the checkout counter.

C. Fun Dip

Fun Dip came with flavored powder and a candy stick to dip, and the stick was candy too. It was messy and fun. Critics say it was basically sugar on sugar, which makes it the easiest treat to cut for some people.

Keep it if: You saved the stick for last, licked the powder off your fingers and loved every messy minute.

D. Warheads

Warheads were the extreme sour candy of the 90s, the kind you held in your mouth as a challenge. They made faces scrunch on every playground. If you never liked sour candy, Warheads are an obvious cut.

Keep it if: You loved the sour challenge and could keep a Warhead in your mouth longer than anyone else.

Our take

We would cut Fun Dip. It was fun, but the other three each had a signature experience you could not get anywhere else: the crackle, the ring and the sour challenge. The most fun debate usually comes from Pop Rocks fans against Warheads fans, since both are all about the reaction. Bring a bag of each to your next game night and see who can last longest on the Warhead. Then share which candy you would trade at the lunch table for anything.

90s Candy: quick answers

Is it dangerous to eat Pop Rocks with soda?

No. The old playground story that eating Pop Rocks and drinking soda could make your stomach explode is a myth. The fizz from Pop Rocks comes from a small amount of carbon dioxide, which is safe. The myth was so popular that it was tested on TV shows.

Are Warheads still sold today?

Yes. Warheads extreme sour candy is still sold today, in the classic hard candy and in newer forms like chewy cubes and sour spray. The brand has even teamed up with other products for sour flavored versions. Many stores keep them near the register.
