Country music has a hall of legends, and these four are among the biggest names in it. This One Gotta Go card puts them on the same stage: Dolly Parton, Johnny Cash, Kenny Rogers and Willie Nelson.

You keep three and remove one from the playlist forever. Think about the songs your family played on road trips, the one you still sing along to and the legend you know more by name than by music. Then make your pick and see who in your group knows all the words.

Dolly Parton vs Johnny Cash vs Kenny Rogers vs Willie Nelson

A. Dolly Parton

Dolly Parton wrote classics like Jolene and I Will Always Love You, and she is just as famous for her kindness and her theme park, Dollywood. She is a national treasure. The only case for cutting her is that her fame now reaches well beyond country music.

Keep it if: You love her songwriting, her humor and the way she brings people together across every age group.

B. Johnny Cash

Johnny Cash, the Man in Black, brought a rough, honest voice to songs like Folsom Prison Blues and I Walk the Line. He crossed into rock and folk too. Some listeners find his deep voice and darker songs less fun, which makes him a fair cut.

Keep it if: You love his deep voice, his outlaw spirit and the late-career covers that gave his music new life.

C. Kenny Rogers

Kenny Rogers gave us The Gambler and smooth duets, including Islands in the Stream with Dolly Parton. He was a crossover star. Next to the other three, though, his sound is the most pop, which makes him the easiest to cut for country purists.

Keep it if: You know every word to The Gambler and love a smooth, easy country ballad.

D. Willie Nelson

Willie Nelson is known for On the Road Again, his braids and his long career as an outlaw country legend. He also helped start Farm Aid. His laid-back style and unique voice are not for everyone, which makes him a candidate for the cut.

Keep it if: You love a relaxed, timeless sound and think Willie is the coolest person in country music history.

Our take

We would cut Kenny Rogers. He had huge hits, but Dolly, Johnny and Willie each shaped country music's identity in ways that still echo today. And you still get Islands in the Stream through Dolly. The most fun debate usually lands on Johnny Cash against Willie Nelson, since both are outlaw legends with very different styles. Play one song from each artist before you vote and let the music decide. Bonus points for anyone who can sing the chorus.
