Facebook X

Most people split their screen time between a few favorite apps, and everyone has one they could not give up. This One Gotta Go card puts four giants together: TikTok, Instagram, Twitter / X and YouTube.

Three platforms stay on your phone, and one is deleted forever. Think about the app you open first in the morning, the one you scroll late at night and the one you keep meaning to delete. Then make your pick and share your screen time if you are brave enough.

TikTok vs Instagram vs Twitter / X vs YouTube

A. TikTok

TikTok made short videos a worldwide habit, with a feed that seems to know exactly what you like. It is hugely addictive. That is also the case against it, since many people say they lose hours without noticing, which makes it a popular cut.

Keep it if: You love discovering new creators, trends and laughs, and your feed feels made just for you.

B. Instagram

Instagram started with photos and grew into stories, reels and messages with friends. It is where many people share their lives. Some find it focused on looking perfect, which makes it a candidate to cut.

Keep it if: You share photos and stories with friends and love keeping up with the people you care about.

C. Twitter / X

Twitter, renamed X in 2023, is where news breaks fast and conversations happen in real time. It is great for following events. Many users feel it changed a lot after the name change, which makes it the most common platform to cut.

Keep it if: You follow breaking news, sports and live events there and love the real time conversation.

D. YouTube

YouTube has everything from music videos and tutorials to long podcasts and creators you have followed for years. It is the hardest to replace. If you mainly watch short clips elsewhere, YouTube might be the one you could cut.

Keep it if: You learn new skills, watch your favorite creators and listen to music there every day.

Our take

We would cut Twitter / X. It is still useful for news, but the other three are where people watch, share and learn the most, and YouTube in particular would be very hard to replace. The most fun debate usually comes down to TikTok against Instagram, since both compete for the same scrolling time. Ask everyone to check their screen time and see which app wins, because the numbers rarely lie. Then challenge each other to a week with one less app and compare notes afterward.

Social Media Platforms: quick answers

When did Twitter become X?

Twitter was renamed X in July 2023, after it was bought by Elon Musk in 2022. The bird logo was replaced with an X, and posts were renamed from tweets. Many people still call it Twitter in everyday conversation. The rename also brought new features and changes to verification.

What is the most used social media platform?

Facebook and YouTube have long been among the most used social media platforms worldwide, with Instagram, WhatsApp and TikTok also counting huge audiences. Usage differs a lot by age group, with younger users spending more time on TikTok and Instagram. Rankings change often, so the answer depends on the year and the region you are looking at.
