Extreme sports are all about adrenaline, skill and a little bit of fear. This One Gotta Go card puts four thrill seeking favorites together: snowboarding, skateboarding, rock climbing and skydiving. Each one has its own culture, its own gear and its own group of fans who cannot get enough of it.

Three sports stay on your bucket list, and one is off it forever. Think about which one you have actually tried, which one you love watching and which one makes your stomach drop just thinking about it. Then pick and share whether you are the daredevil or the cautious one in your group.

Snowboarding vs Skateboarding vs Rock Climbing vs Skydiving

A. Snowboarding

Snowboarding means fresh powder, mountain views and tricks in the terrain park. It is beautiful and fun. It is also expensive, with lift tickets, gear and travel, and it only works when there is snow. That makes it a fair cut for many people.

Keep it if: You love winter trips, carving down a mountain and the feeling of landing your first jump.

B. Skateboarding

Skateboarding started on the streets and in empty pools and became an Olympic sport. All you need is a board and some pavement. The downside is the falls, which can be painful, and it takes a lot of practice before you look good doing it.

Keep it if: You grew up skating with friends, you love the culture and you still remember landing your first trick.

C. Rock Climbing

Rock climbing tests strength, balance and problem solving, whether you are at a gym or on a cliff outdoors. It is a full body challenge. It also takes training and the right gear to do safely, which makes it less spontaneous than the others.

Keep it if: You love solving a route, building strength and reaching the top of a wall you thought you could not climb.

D. Skydiving

Skydiving means jumping from a plane and free falling for what feels like forever before the parachute opens. It is the biggest rush on this card. It is also a one time thrill for most people, it costs a lot per jump and the fear stops many from ever trying it.

Keep it if: You have done it or want to, and you think nothing compares to the rush of falling through the sky.

Our take

We would cut skydiving. It is an incredible experience, but most people do it once, while the other three are sports you can practice, improve at and enjoy for years. The most fun debate usually comes down to snowboarding against skateboarding, since the two share a lot of style and culture. Ask everyone which sport they would try this weekend if it were free and safe.

Extreme Sports: quick answers

Is skateboarding an Olympic sport?

Yes. Skateboarding made its Olympic debut at the Tokyo Games, held in 2021, with street and park events. It returned at the Paris 2024 Games. Its inclusion helped bring the sport and its culture to an even wider audience around the world.

Is indoor rock climbing a good way to start?

Indoor climbing gyms are a popular way for beginners to learn. They offer rental gear, staff who teach safety basics and routes for every skill level. Many people start with bouldering, which uses short walls and padded floors instead of ropes.
