Ice cream is supposed to be easy, but picking a favorite flavor never is. This One Gotta Go card puts four classics on the table: chocolate, vanilla, strawberry and cookies and cream. Each one has its fans, and each one is the first choice for somebody at your table.

You keep three and say goodbye to one for good, at every scoop shop and in every freezer aisle. Think about the flavor you reach for first, the one you only eat when nothing else is left, and make your call.

Chocolate vs Vanilla vs Strawberry vs Cookies & Cream

A. Chocolate

Chocolate is rich and comforting, and it pairs with almost anything. But it can be heavy, and some people find a full bowl too much. If you prefer something lighter or fruitier, chocolate might be the one you could give up and still be happy.

Keep it if: Your idea of the perfect scoop is deep, dark and chocolatey, with nothing fancy mixed in.

B. Vanilla

Vanilla is the base of almost every sundae, milkshake and pie a la mode. That makes it the hardest to cut and the easiest to call boring. If you never order it on its own, you might be surprised how little you miss it.

Keep it if: You love it on warm pie, in a milkshake, or with toppings piled high, and you think plain is underrated.

C. Strawberry

Strawberry is the flavor that often gets left behind in a carton of Neapolitan. It is sweet and fruity, but it rarely gets picked first. If you are being honest about your freezer habits, strawberry may already be the flavor you skip.

Keep it if: You love a fruity, creamy scoop on a hot day and strawberry always reminds you of summer.

D. Cookies & Cream

Cookies and cream is the fun one, with chunks of chocolate cookie in every bite. The case against it is that it is really vanilla with a mix-in, so cutting it still leaves you vanilla. If you like your flavors simple, it is an easy cut.

Keep it if: The cookie pieces are the best part, and you always go hunting for the biggest chunk.

Our take

We would cut strawberry. It is a lovely flavor, but it is the one most often left in the carton, and the other three show up in more sundaes, shakes and late-night bowls. The most fun debate is usually vanilla against cookies and cream, since one side says vanilla is the base of everything and the other says it needs a mix-in to shine. Bonus round: ask who would pick a cone over a cup.
