Pizza toppings start more friendly debates than almost any other food question. This One Gotta Go card skips pepperoni and puts four toppings people feel strongly about on the table: pineapple, red onion, bell peppers and mushrooms.

You keep three and cut one from every pizza you will ever order. Think about the toppings you pick off, the ones you add on purpose and the one that has started the most debates at your table. Then cut one, keep three, and get ready to explain yourself to the friend who ordered the opposite.

Pineapple vs Red Onion vs Bell Peppers vs Mushrooms

A. Pineapple

Pineapple is the most talked-about topping in pizza history. Fans love the sweet and salty mix with ham, while critics say fruit has no place on a pizza at all. If you are on the no-pineapple side, this choice takes about one second, and you will not be alone.

Keep it if: You love a Hawaiian pizza, you think sweet and salty belong together, and you are happy to explain why to anyone who asks.

B. Red Onion

Red onion adds a sharp bite and a pop of color, but it can be strong, and it lingers on your breath long after dinner. Some people pick it off, others ask for extra. If you are heading out after pizza night, red onion might be the one you skip.

Keep it if: You like a little sharpness and crunch on your slice, and you think onions make every pizza taste fresher.

C. Bell Peppers

Bell peppers are a supreme pizza regular, adding crunch and a fresh, slightly sweet flavor. They are also the topping people forget they even ordered. If you never notice them, cutting peppers might be the least painful choice on this card.

Keep it if: You always order a supreme or veggie pizza and like a little crunch and color in every slice.

D. Mushrooms

Mushrooms are earthy and soft, and they soak up sauce and cheese beautifully. But the texture puts a lot of people off, especially when they turn slippery. If mushrooms are on your never list, you already know your answer to this one.

Keep it if: You love that savory, earthy flavor, and you think mushrooms make a pizza feel like it came from a real pizzeria.

Our take

We would cut bell peppers. They are pleasant, but they are the topping least likely to be the reason anyone orders a pizza, and the other three each have a strong identity. The most fun debate will almost always be pineapple, and that is exactly why we love this card. Let the pineapple fans make their case first, then let the critics respond, and do not be surprised if someone switches sides by the end of the night.

Pizza Toppings: quick answers

Where did pineapple on pizza come from?

The Hawaiian pizza, with ham and pineapple, is widely credited to a restaurant owner in Ontario, Canada, in the early 1960s, not to Hawaii. The name came from the canned pineapple brand used at the time. It went on to become one of the most talked about pizzas ever made.

What are the most popular pizza toppings?

Pepperoni is the classic favorite in the United States, followed by toppings like sausage, mushrooms, onions, bacon, peppers and extra cheese. Pineapple is less common but famous for how much people talk about it, which is why it shows up on this card.
