Weekends as a kid were the best part of the week, with no homework stress and endless free time. This One Gotta Go card brings back four classic weekend moments: Saturday morning cartoons in pajamas, all day outside with the neighborhood, Blockbuster movie night with family and sleeping over at your best friend's house.

Three stay in your childhood memories, and one disappears. Think about what made your weekends special, what you still try to recreate and the one you could let go. Then pick and share your favorite weekend memory, the kind that makes adults wish for one more lazy Saturday.

The 4 choices on this card

A. Saturday morning cartoons in pajamas

Saturday morning cartoons in pajamas, with a bowl of cereal, were a weekly ritual. It was pure comfort. With streaming, you can watch cartoons any time now, which makes this the easiest memory to give up for some people.

Keep it if: You woke up early just for the cartoons and still think nothing beats that Saturday morning feeling.

B. All day outside with the neighborhood

Spending all day outside with the neighborhood kids, until the streetlights came on, meant bikes, games and freedom. It was a big part of growing up. Not every neighborhood had it, which makes it a possible cut for some.

Keep it if: You played outside until dark, knew every kid on the block and came home only when called for dinner.

C. Blockbuster movie night with family

Blockbuster movie night meant wandering the aisles, picking a movie and hoping it was not already rented. It was a family event. The late fees and the rewind rule made it a little stressful, which makes it a fair cut.

Keep it if: You remember the blue and yellow store, the candy at the counter and the excitement of picking a new release.

D. Sleeping over at your best friend's house

Sleeping over at your best friend's house meant staying up late, prank calls and pancakes in the morning. It was special. Some kids got homesick or were not allowed to sleep over, which makes it a candidate to cut.

Keep it if: You stayed up talking all night with your best friend and still remember those sleepovers fondly.

Our take

We would cut Blockbuster movie night. It was fun, but streaming gives us the movie part any time we want, while cartoons, playing outside and sleepovers are tied to being a kid in a way that cannot be copied. The most fun debate usually comes down to playing outside against sleepovers, since both are about friends. Ask everyone what their perfect childhood Saturday looked like, from morning to night. Then plan a throwback weekend that brings back your favorite part.

Weekend As a Kid: quick answers

When did Blockbuster close?

Blockbuster closed most of its stores in the early 2010s after the rise of streaming and rental kiosks. One franchise store in Bend, Oregon, remains open and has become a tourist attraction and a symbol of video store nostalgia. Visitors often buy shirts and take photos out front, and the store has appeared in a documentary about its story.

Why did Saturday morning cartoons end?

Saturday morning cartoons faded in the 2000s and 2010s as kids gained access to cable channels and streaming, and broadcast networks shifted their Saturday schedules. Many people still remember the tradition fondly as part of growing up.
