Your seat on a plane says a lot about how you like to travel, and people are surprisingly loyal to their favorite. This One Gotta Go card puts four seat preferences together: the window seat, the aisle seat, the middle seat for the unbothered and first class only or bust.

Three preferences stay, and one is gone forever on every flight. Think about where you always book, where you end up when the flight is full and what you would pay to avoid. Then make your pick and share your best or worst seatmate story from a flight.

The 4 choices on this card

A. Window Seat

The window seat gives you views of clouds and cities, plus a wall to lean on for sleeping. It is a favorite for many travelers. You also have to climb over people to get up, which makes it a fair cut for anyone who needs to stretch or use the restroom often.

Keep it if: You love watching takeoff and landing, and you want a wall to lean on while you sleep.

B. Aisle Seat

The aisle seat gives you freedom to stand up, stretch and get off the plane faster. It is practical. You also get bumped by carts and have to stand whenever your row mates need out, which makes it a candidate to cut.

Keep it if: You like getting up whenever you want and being first out when the plane lands.

C. Middle Seat (unbothered)

The middle seat is the one almost nobody chooses, but some unbothered travelers truly do not mind it. It is rare to love. Most people would cut it in a second, which makes it the most common pick on this card.

Keep it if: You are relaxed, you sleep anywhere and you are happy to take the middle so friends can have better seats.

D. First Class Only or Bust

First class only or bust means extra space, better food and a calmer trip. It is luxurious. It is also very expensive, and for most people it is not realistic on every flight, which makes it a fair cut for budget travelers.

Keep it if: You value comfort above all and would rather fly less often than squeeze into economy.

Our take

We would cut first class only or bust, since it is not a seat most people can book every time, while window, aisle and middle are real choices travelers make on almost every flight. The most fun debate is always window against aisle, since both sides think their seat is obviously better. Ask everyone where they sit and why, and do not be surprised if a couple discovers they always want the same seat.

Flight Seat Preferences: quick answers

Who gets the armrests on a plane?

A common rule of travel etiquette says the person in the middle seat gets both middle armrests, since the window seat has the wall and the aisle seat has extra room on one side. It is not an official rule, but many travelers consider it the polite thing to do.

What is the best seat on a plane?

It depends on what you want. Window seats are great for sleeping and views, aisle seats are best for easy access, and seats near the front help you get off faster. Exit rows offer more legroom but come with responsibilities in an emergency.
